Injuries in Essex County
Located 10 miles north of Boston, Lynn, Massachusetts had a population of just over 90,000 as of the 2010 census, making it the 9th largest city in Massachusetts. Formerly a hub of manufacturing, Lynn suffered extensive population losses in the late 20th century as manufacturing dried up and a series of catastrophic fires leveled much of the downtown. In the early 21st century, however, Lynn is in the process of undergoing a revitalization, and its population, which had declined to 78,000 from a high of over 102,000, has begun to rebound.
As residents moved out in the late 20th century, Lynn was known as “the city of sin,” for its high crime rate. This label was an unfair stereotype, however, as Lynn’s history is rich with invention, leading city officials to call it “the city of firsts” in the 1990s. Indeed, a number of “firsts” took place in Lynn, from the first fire engine, to the first jet engine, to the first baseball game under artificial light. Lynn is additionally home to 2 public beaches, and features diverse neighborhoods that surround the downtown and business districts.
Lynn’s history is also remarkable in the sporting arena. While many people know that Fraser Field was once the home to a Boston Red Sox minor league affiliate, people are often surprised to learn that the Manning Bowl was home to the Boston Yanks of the NFL in the 1940s. In recent years, Fraser Field underwent extensive renovation, and in the 21st century has hosted minor league baseball once again.
Lynn is easily accessible from anywhere in metro Boston, as United States Route 1 runs through the city, and Route 128 runs very nearby. The MBTA also runs a commuter rail line through Lynn, and the Blue Line ends in nearby Revere.
